It's time for the Toys for Tots race at Steel City Speedway. It was great to see the supportive turnout for the race and the amount of toys collected was impressive. It's Saturday Morning and its cold. The original forecast said a high of 62 so figuring it is Fontana it may be a couple degrees higher...WRONG. By Noon it was 52 and 1:00 it was 54 and that is where it would stay. Some people even packed up and went home when the wind chill took effect from the breeze blowing. 54 Degrees...Not a good combination for getting grip with rubber tires. In Q2 it was Kyle just making 27 with Victor at 26 and Craig and Phil at 25. The Spec5 guys seemed to be having a little better time of it with their 4WD cars and Ken and Gary both running 26 laps. In Q3 Kyle backed up his 27 with Craig running his best Q with a 26. In Q3 the Spec 5 top two were right up there in times. Gary Kyes and Ken Gerberding both running 27 laps and Mike Braun (Track Announcer Extraordinaire) getting to run in this event had his best run. The mains are set an in spec5 Gary Kyes edged out Ken Gerberding for TQ by 1/10. Paul Smith, Chris Markley and Mike Braun would be your top 5. In STC Kyle Goodwine would get pole followed by Craig Kaplan, Victor Garcia, Phil Goodwine and James Stuard. The SPEC5 Main had some great battles. A good tight battle for first for as long as it lasted (see video) between Gary and Ken and the group that couldn't get away from each other all race long ending up in a battle for second to the end. Chris Markley, Paul Smith and Mike Braun. In STC it was the Kyle show. Kyle put on a clinic with his dominating performance over the field. The closest anyone got to Kyle was Craig Kaplan on the first lap in turn 4 where he was side by side on an inside dive pass that didn't work. After that Kyle just started to check out and won by a lap over Craig. Cedric Collins (finally finishing a race in who knows how long) finished 3rd with Victor Garcia in 4th and Quoc Nguyen in 5th. 2 - Craig Kaplan 1 - Kyle Goodwine 3 - Cedric Collins
STC Race (Full) 2 - Paul Smith 1 - Ken Gerberding 3 - Chris Markley
Early Battle for 1st
Mid Race tight Battle for 1st
End Race battle for second with Markley, Smith and Braun
RAMS, Hint Hint Nudge Nudge, Keep this race for next year.
Oct 10-11 - The RAMS got everyone together and hosted a two day event.
Their Halloween G.P. 1st Annual ???. Yeah they should keep this race. The
weather was nice although it could have been hit and miss as there was rain
predicted earlier in the week, that eventually changed. It was a pretty good
turnout and some good racing as well. There were even some unexpected
visitors as Tod Rizzo, Bryn and Tony Foskett showed up.
STC Once the flagged dropped John would never be seen again...lol. He ran a clean consistent race on his way to the win. 3rd - Craig Kaplan 1st - John Burnett 2nd - Arnold Mercado Opening Laps of STC Race
F1 Its good to be on the pole. Fernando Jose had a clear shot into Turn 1 and missed what happened behind him. May have been an interesting race otherwise....Just saying. 3rd - Chuck Clendenen 1st - Fernando Jose 2nd - Hau-Ching Liao (Mr. Podium)
Super Sport Steve had a great run on his way to his win by 3 laps over 2nd place. 3rd - Hau-Ching Liao 1st - Steve Gerace 2nd - Chuck Clendenen
Sportsman It was good to see Tim get out from behind the mic and run, Congrats 1st - Tim Gerace 2nd - Al Gerace

Mains Day did
not disappoint with some exiting races. Spec5 Sportsman was won by less than
8 seconds, Spec5 had a great race also with the win decided by 1.229 seconds
with Gary over the Gerberding prepared ride of Bill Jeric. Those two were
just too consistent and your pole sitter Paul Smith after swallowing the
inversion pill never got past 3rd. STC Sportsman had a good battle for 2nd
between James Stuard, Greg Shum and Simon Kau. Down to the wire separated by
9 seconds and STC had a race long battle for
1st between Satoshi and Kyle with Kyle getting past
late in the race and the battle for 3rd with Craig Kaplan charging hard to
get past David Blakeney (8th Scale) was separated by 13 seconds. We
spoke with David after the race and asked if this was a one off. He said he
had a blast and as long as the track was like this he would race again. STC

By observing Thursday and Friday practice the one to watch looked to be new arrival to 5th scale (at SCS) Satoshi Takesako. But as qualifying started, the one to watch was Ken Gerberding. Ken ran some quick and consistent laps to take TQ for Friday just missing out on a 30 lap run by 1.7 seconds. Your top three for Friday all running 29 laps were Ken, Satoshi and Phil Goodwine. But we are missing a few drivers that could shake up the standings come Saturday. Come Saturday and the gangs all here, Satoshi found that speed he had been showing in practice and got a 30 lap run Saturday morning. He backed that up with another 30 lap run by Saturday afternoon (Round 4) and grabbed TQ in the points format. Craig Kaplan was able to get in a 29 lap run just short of Gerberding's time. Jason Markley was able to improved on his time and would grab the 3 spot on the grid. Your starting 5 for the main would be: Satoshi, Ken, Jason, Phil and Craig. Satoshi got a good start while behind him there was a little bumping around for position. By the end of lap 1 the one who made out was Craig Kaplan, going from 5th to 3rd and the next lap into 2nd. By lap 10 Craig had taken over the top spot only to lose it back on lap 25, he would regain the top spot on lap 33 and not look back. Ken would finish in 2nd and Victor Garcia in 3rd.
Ken Gerberding Craig Kaplan Victor Garcia For SPEC 5 the big news was that Joel Johnson was going to be running a Goodwine prepared car for the event. He ended up where everyone expected him to be after qualifying but not by a long shot. The top 4 drivers all had the same number of laps and separated by 11 seconds. At the start of the race everyone got away clean until turn 1 when the prison break club was put on Joel and he went from 1st to last. He would make it back to 4th by lap 14 only to retire a short time later. Paul Smith would take over the top spot and never look back. Gary Kyes would take second and Kody Kilber in 3rd.
Gary Kyes Paul Smith Kody Kilber
